Caliban Shrieks: Jack Chadwick in conversation with Ian Kershaw

August 6 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us to hear about the rediscovery of the lost masterpiece by Oldham author Jack Hilton that inspired George Orwell.

Jack Hilton was born in Oldham and died in Chadderton. In 1935, his autobiographical novel Caliban Shrieks about working class life at the start of the 20th century was published to widespread acclaim, inspiring George Orwell to write The Road to Wigan Pier. He went on to write two more novels, a book of travel writing, a study of social change under the post-war Labour government, and a series of autobiographical essays.

Then, in 1950, Hilton disappeared from the literary world.

Join us to find out how Jack Chadwick rediscovered this lost masterpiece, and what Corrie scriptwriter Ian Kershaw’s connection is to the novel.

Copies of Caliban Shrieks will be available to purchase on the night.
